The Abrams is characterized by heavy armor (it is one of the heaviest combat vehicles in the world) and the adoption of the powerful multi-fuel turbine engine. The M1 Abrams, entered in service at the beginning of ‘80s to replace the old M-60, has a sophisticated computer fire control system and a modern composite armor. Great attention to the protection of the crew thanks to the separate and heavily protected ammunition storage. It was originally armed with a 105 mm main gun replaced very soon by a more modern and powerful Rheinmetall 120 mm smooth-bore cannon. The Abrams has been widely used, with lethal effectiveness, on all the main war theaters from the Middle East to Afghanistan showing great superiority against enemy tanks.
